Here are our top 3 tips on how to become a Social Media Influencer.

1. Figure out your passion and plan

The first step is figuring out what you want to talk about and the type of brands you want to attract. Find a niche that you're passionate about and feel that you can add value in.  A good place to start is to research what other influencers are already doing and make lists of the content they share. For example, there are influencers that focus on travel, photography, humour, fashion, pets and self-help, amongst other things. Can you capitalise from your current skills to become an influencer in any of these fields? Once you position yourself in a certain area, it'll be easier for brands to see what you're all about and what you represent and how you'd contribute.

2. Be open to new Platforms

The social media landscape is constantly changing. If you want to become an influencer, you have to embrace change and always be willing to test out new features or up-and-coming platforms. We know Instagram is the most dominant platform of influencer marketing but you should look towards building your presence across other platforms that are relevant to your industry. For example, Tumblr is an excellent website for travel influencers and Snapchat is a great platform beauty influencers!

5. Combine Digital and Human-to-Human Networking

Don’t limit yourself to the digital sphere! We advise that you get out, network and attend industry events. This can lead to more influencer marketing opportunities in your niche area and you can collaborate with others in your industry. Make sure you're approachable and your authenticity will shine through. Use your unique personality to engage with people and make contacts.  Once you've linked up with some fabulous contacts; follow up with them online. Give them a phone call or a private message on LinkedIn to keep your relationships moving and to check in from time to time.

Staying visible and approachable means that people will come to you and you can share the work you've created with them. Remember, your brand is your personality. The more real and authentic you can be, the more successful you’ll become!
